Keep your
firmware up to date
Just as camera manufacturers regularly release firmware updates for their cameras, we release them for our Angelbird and RED® CFexpress cards, and Angelbird SSDs. These updates address bugs, add new features, enhance your card's performance, and ensure your media remains compatible with cameras old and new. You can check for regular updates and download the latest Angelbird Firmware Update Tool here.
By updating you'll get the latest Angelbird card feature upgrades
Also ensure your card's features are in sync with new camera firmware updates
Updates solve known issues that might be affecting your card's performance
The security and firewall features on macOS are great, but make installing the Angelbird Firmware Update Tool a little more complex. You can find a detailed step-by-step in the macOS User Manual, which we recommend following as a first step.
To download and use the Angelbird Firmware Update Tool, go ahead and:
- Download, install, and open up the Angelbird Firmware Update Tool.
- Insert your CFexpress card into the card reader and connect the reader to your computer.
- Follow the step-by-step instructions and prompts.
Why you need an Angelbird or RED CFexpress Card Reader to perform updates
For a successful update, your card and card reader needs to be in sync with the drivers and your operating system. You'll need an Angelbird or RED CFexpress Card Reader so our Firmware Update Tool can communicate with the to-be-updated-card. Using another reader, will lead to an unsuccessful update.
Please back up all your data before performing the update, as all data on the card will be erased.

* The Angelbird Performance Card Reader can only be used with the Firmware Update Tool V1.70 in USB3 mode, indicated by the status LED on its front panel lighting up blue. In case your system only offers USB4 ports (e.g. MacBook Air/Pro) the update could still be done using a USB3 cable. The cable included with your Performance Card Reader is a USB4-rated cable and therefore cannot be used for this purpose.
