How to set up maximum performance with the Performance Card Reader on your Windows PC?

Performance Card Reader

The Microsoft Windows operating system limits the write speeds of external high-performance card readers by disabling write caching by default. This is intended as a safety measure so data loss can potentially be avoided when the CFexpress card is disconnected from the reader while it’s being written to. While this may be useful in some scenarios, it drastically reduces write speeds by up to 6 times (3 GB/s to 0.5 GB/s).

Therefore, we’re providing users who require the highest levels of performance with instructions on how to unlock the full advertised speeds of our Angelbird Performance Card Readers below:

  1. After successfully connecting your Performance Card Reader with a CFexpress card inserted to your PC's USB-4 (or Thunderbolt) port, right-click the mounted storage volume on your desktop and select the Properties option from the dropdown.
  2. Within the device properties window, navigate to the Hardware tab. In there, a list showing removable storage devices will appear.
  3. Select the CFexpress card in this list, and press the “Properties” button at the bottom-right of the window.
  4. Another window showing various details about the CFexpress card will open.
  5. Within the General tab of this window, you’ll see a “Change Settings“ button at the bottom left. Pressing it will reveal a new Policies tab.
  6. In the Policies tab, select the option called “Better performance,” and just below it tick the checkbox to “Enable write caching on the device.”
After following these steps, your Angelbird Performance Card Reader will now operate at its maximum speeds, so you can transfer your files faster than ever.
